Deadly Tornadoes Tear Through Iowa Town

Greenfield Community Grieves After Devastating Storm

GREENFIELD, Iowa (AP) — Multiple people were killed when a tornado tore through Greenfield, Iowa, on Tuesday, leaving a wide swath of obliterated homes in its wake. Authorities are still counting the dead and wounded in this small southwestern Iowa town Wednesday morning.

Five Dead, 35 Injured in Iowa Tornadoes

Officials say five people died and at least 35 were hurt as powerful tornadoes ripped through Iowa, with one carving a path of destruction through Greenfield. The storm system, which also included large hail and damaging winds, affected parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.

The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down in Greenfield at approximately 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The twister caused widespread damage, destroying homes, businesses, and infrastructure.

Emergency responders from across Iowa are on the scene, assisting with search and rescue efforts. The Iowa State Patrol has confirmed multiple fatalities, but the exact number is still being determined.

Greenfield, a community of about 2,000 people, is located approximately 40 miles southwest of Des Moines. The town is known for its historic downtown and its annual RAGBRAI bike ride.

The tornado that struck Greenfield was part of a larger storm system that moved across the Midwest on Tuesday evening. The National Weather Service has issued tornado warnings for several counties in Iowa, as well as parts of Missouri, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

Residents in affected areas are urged to take shelter and stay informed about the latest weather conditions.
